Virtual Summer Maker Days – how will it work?

Virtual Art Class All Summer Long

In this unsure time, we want to help bring creativity and the arts to your home.  We are offering our favored Summer Maker Days as a virtual – at home- option this summer.  You can feel safe knowing your student will still have the opportunity to build, explore and create through hands on makers projects this summer! Plus, you won’t have to go shopping for all the supplies or research new projects for them to create.  We provide the supplies, instruction and artists to help your student have a fun day of making from home. If you decide to join us virtually, you also get a virtual studio link so your student can follow along with us in studio and share their handmade goods with the class.  It is going to be a whole summer of fun.  We have a new set of projects each week!

So how does this all work? When you are registering for a Summer Maker Day it will ask you if you want to attend class as Virtual Only, In Studio Only or Flexible. Choose Virtual Only if you want to go ahead and secure a packet of supplies for a specific class.  You can also choose Flexible if you would like your student to be on the list to attend in studio, but if spaces fill up, you would still like to attend virtually. Well take a minute to help answer some of your questions on how this all works below.

Q: What does it mean to attend Summer Maker Day virtually?

A: It basically means, from the comfort of your home, you and your student can participate in the same activities we will be doing in studio. We will create a supply packet that will include all specific supplies needed and general instructions to create your art projects. We will also provide a link to join us in our virtual studio to follow along as we make these projects.  Learn more about the virtual classroom below.

Q: How do I get my supply packet?

A: We will be packaging up supplies each week and an email will be sent when your supplies are ready to either pick up or be shipped to you. If you sign up for multiple Summer Maker Days please be aware that you may receive your supply packets in multiple pickups or shipments.

Q: I choose local pick up, when will I be able to pick up my supply packet?

A: Currently our studio is open Wednesday and Thursday 10:30am to 3:00pm for supply pickups. We will update these times if we are able to be open longer hours. Before coming by the studio for pickup, please be sure you have received your email that your supply packet is ready. Curbside pickup is available, just give us a call at 864-610-0996 when you arrive in our parking lot. Let us know the name used at registration and we will bring it right out!

Q: Do you ship across the US?

A: YES! We would love to have your student participate in virtual Summer Maker Days, where ever home may be. To insure supplies get to you in time, if you live outside of SC, GA or NC, please be sure to register your student at least 10 business days prior to the event.

Q: Will my child be in front of a computer screen for 4 hours?

A: They most certainly do not have to be!  We want to give you the flexibility of joining our virtual studio for the instructional parts of class, at the end of class to show off your handmade projects or you have the option to skip the virtual studio all together.

Q: What is the Virtual Studio?

A:  The virtual studio is an online audio/video meeting we use to help connect our student at home with the art teachers and students here in the studio.  During our regular Summer Maker Day time slot, we will have a teaching artist and virtual studio host here to help conduct class. You can join us at the start of class using a special link and password that we will provide.  Follow along as we get instructions from our artists, tips for making our handmade projects and more.  Our virtual studio host will help if your student has questions or issues getting their project completed. At the end of each class, 12:30p for Kids class and 1:30p for Juniors class, we will let all the students at home and in the studio share their projects with each other.  Even though we cannot come together as a large group we want everyone to feel connected.  We look forward to the opportunity to see your student in the virtual studio!

Q: How do I get my link to the virtual studio and will it be the same for each class?

A: For security reasons, we will not send out the link and password for your Summer Maker Day until the Wednesday before your schedule event. Each class will have its own unique link and password.

Q: Will my student be able to complete these projects on their own?

A: The projects included in our pack each week will vary in the amount of hands-on adult supervision that may be needed. As well, your student may be old enough to follow the directions and use at home tools without help.  We encourage adults to look over the projects and instructions with their students prior to beginning each project. Keep in mind, these projects can also be a really fun way for adults and students to create something together.

Q: What if I have more questions about the virtual classes?

A: Just send us an email at trmakersco@gmail.com! We would love to answer any additional questions.

We look forward to creating with you this summer!  Summer Maker Days are open for virtual class registration now, click here to access.

Packet will include the majority of needed supplies with basic supplies like scissors, glue, markers and crayons being supplied at home. Please send your child with a bag lunch and drink.  We do offer the option to purchase lunch on the day of the event for $8, choices include peanut butter & jelly or grilled cheese, fruit and a water. If we are unable to hold in studio classes your payment will be available as a credit for future classes or as a refund.

Flexible Class $45 – Choose this option if you would like to reserve a seat at the studio for your student, but will participate virtually if In Studio is not an option as mandated by the CDC or government. As the semester progresses students will begin to focus on one technique they liked the best to create “products” that they will make, build packaging and branding, getting their goods ready to sell. At the end of each semester we will host a Makers Market for all our students, elementary and juniors, at which point they will be introduced as Makers and gain the experience of talking to visitors and selling their work. Elementary age students (k5-5th) meet Tuesday’s 4p-5:30, check here for more information. Junior age students (6th-10th) meet Thursday’s 4p-5:30p, check here for more information.

The Art of Learning

What’s your happiest memory of school as a child?  Is it a spelling list? A science quiz? Maybe a social studies lesson?  If you‘re like most people, these tasks probably didn’t rate very high in your happy moments memories. But why not?  Maybe spelling was one of your strengths! And certainly, the content you learned in these classes was important! These early subjects lay the foundation for later learning.

The truth is, we remember things that we truly experience, both good and bad.  You might distinctly remember a field trip to a hands-on science museum or the day your dropped your lunch tray much more easily than the lessons from your day to day classes.  In fact, there’s a lot of research out there that explains that we humans are much more likely to remember a fun experience than even an expensive gift!

The TR Makers Co. in downtown Travelers Rest gets it.  They have mastered the art of teaching academic content in a way that incorporates hands-on, experience-based learning.  But that’s not all! At the Makers Co. you’ll find a wide array of opportunities to learn AND to create. This unique little shop features art and hand-made goodies from a multitude of local artisans.

And when you take a step inside, one of the first things you will notice are the industrial style art bars running the width of the back wall. This is where the magic happens.

During the school year, TR Makers Co. offers homeschool classes for kids and teens.  In each class, the students will be engaged in multi-sensory learning. Throughout each semester they will sort, draw, write, speak, dance, make, build, collaborate, sew, paint, sculpt and much more as they learn about literary elements, history, biology and even math! This, the staff knows, is how we really learn.  When we handle clay, dye fabric, build a geometric ornament, we are really building memories- meaningful memories. This is authentic learning. And it is not limited to students who are homeschooled!

Each week, there are also after-school classes for elementary, middle and high school makers. While these classes are less academic in nature, they offer exploration with several art mediums and include specific instruction in artistic entrepreneurship.  These students will learn about the process of planning, making, and marketing a product. For the younger students, the lessons are scaffolded to focus more heavily on creating the product and it’s packaging, while the more mature makers will learn about branding, displaying, pricing and more.

The TR Makers Co. is offering a great opportunity to step in and learn a bit about their unique approach this Saturday, August 24th.

At 11:00 am, the shop will be hosting a ribbon cutting and grand reveal of their beautiful new mural along the Swamp Rabbit Trail.  Just following this event, the shop would like to invite the public to step inside for an open house!

From 12:00-2:00 pm You will have the chance to meet a few of the teachers, learn more about the class offerings for the 2019-20 school year, and even make your own hand-bound journal!  Did I mention it’s free?

Come out and make a memory!
